Work Package 4: Environmental mapping and monitoring

Leader: CUT

This WP focuses on coastal erosion assessment using remote sensing, particularly through unmanned aerial systems (UAS), to map coastline changes and detect shoreline change using state-of-the-art geo visualizations and algorithms. Additionally, it will address coastal water quality evaluation, focusing on Posidonia oceanica meadows and beach wracks, and aims to assemble UAS and Sentinel data to identify pressures and monitor water quality and ecosystem health. Finally, in this WP will be developed machine learning algorithms for landscape change detection using EO and geospatial data, focusing on semantic change detection and timely detection of significant variations in landscape dynamics. These tasks contribute to the project’s overall goal of coastal zone monitoring and management.

Key Objectives:

  • Coastal Erosion Assessment: Utilize remote sensing, particularly unmanned aerial systems (UAS), to assess coastal erosion dynamics, map coastline changes, and detect shoreline positions accurately.
  • Coastal Water Quality Evaluation: Evaluate the water quality of coastal environments, focusing on Posidonia oceanica meadows and beach wracks, by assembling and analyzing UAS and Sentinel data to identify pressures, develop monitoring tools, and assess ecosystem health.
  • Landscape Change Detection: Develop machine learning algorithms for detecting landscape changes using EO and geospatial data, with a focus on semantic change detection, timely identification of significant variations in landscape dynamics, and enhancing detection accuracy and reliability.
  • Integration of Multi-Source Data: Integrate multiple data sources, including UAS, Sentinel, and geospatial data, to enhance the accuracy and reliability of landscape change detection models and coastal zone monitoring tools.
  • Development of Monitoring Tools: Develop comprehensive monitoring tools for coastal erosion, water quality, and landscape changes to facilitate effective coastal zone management and decision-making processes.
