Webinar 1 - European Copernicus Programme (CUT)
Webinar on June 26, 2024. Organized by the Cyprus University of Technology, the event focused on leveraging Earth Observation (EO) technologies and satellite data for coastal management and cultural heritage preservation. The webinar began with a comprehensive overview of the European Copernicus Programme. Presentations detailed the programme’s historical development, core information services, and the capabilities of the Sentinel satellite constellation. These sessions highlighted how freely accessible satellite observation data provides vital continuous monitoring for environmental, maritime, and land applications across Europe. Building on this framework, researcher Claudio Ladisa presented a practical EO case study. His research demonstrated the integration of Sentinel imagery, spatial datasets, and multi-criteria decision analysis to assess environmental vulnerabilities along the Cypriot coastline. Specifically, the methodology evaluated erosion dynamics and natural disaster risks threatening prominent archaeological sites and cultural monuments across Cyprus. By combining broad Earth Observation capabilities with localized risk modeling, the COASTLINE webinar illustrated how space-based tools support sustainable coastal zone planning and protect vulnerable heritage assets.
